Thermodynamics of Phase Transitions
Amir Reza Bohluli, Applied Chemistry Undergraduate Student, Shahid Beheshti University
We are going to talk about the phase diagrams of pure substances. One type of these phase diagrams is a map of the pressures at which each phase of a substance is the most stable. We will also talk about the phase rule, summarizing the variables on the equilibria between the phases. This topic will also introduce a concept named chemical potential, which is the center of discussions about mixtures and chemical reactions. Later on, we’ll discuss thermodynamical aspects of phase transitions which considers the factors that determine the positions and shapes of phase boundaries. The expressions derived show how the vapor pressure of a substance varies with temperature and how its melting point varies with pressure.
